The Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care are funded by the Government of Ontario to provide continuing education
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has renewed the Personal Support Worker Education Fund for Long-Term Care. In its inaugural year (2017/18), the fund had far-reaching impacts on the Ontario long-term care (LTC) sector, supporting continuing education for over 5,000 personal support workers (PSW) across 166 LTC homes.
The objective of the Fund is to build PSW capacity to deliver high-quality and safe care that meets residents’ needs. The Fund provides tuition and backfill to LTC homes for PSWs to participate in continuing education and professional development.
For the second year, the Ministry is working with the Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care (Ontario CLRI) to offer Excellence in Resident-Centred Care (ERCC) training. ERCC builds practical skills using a person-centred approach to support better care and better outcomes for LTC residents. ERCC is delivered in partnership with Conestoga College and the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging.
ERCC uses a train-the-trainer model. Participating homes will identify up to four PSW trainers, who will complete online education and attend a regional ERCC Trainer Workshop. PSW trainers will then deliver ERCC Team Member training to fellow PSWs within their LTC home. The Fund will provide tuition and backfill for PSWs who successfully complete the course, both at the Trainer and Team Member levels.
The fund will accept online applications from Ontario LTC homes from July 18, 2018 until August 1, 2018. Only complete and accurate applications will be reviewed with priority given to homes who are participating for the first time. Approved LTC homes will be eligible to train PSWs in ERCC between September 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019.
