The Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) is a charitable non-profit organization that partners with the University of Waterloo, Conestoga College, and Schlegel Villages to enhance the care and quality of life for older adults. Through collaborations with key partners and stakeholders, RIA supports practice-relevant research and knowledge mobilization. Research evidence is
used to inform programs, education and training, and influence practice and policy. The RIA consists of 15 research chairs and specialists, affiliate researchers, and staff members with a commitment to improved quality of life and care across the continuum of care.
The Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation for Long-Term Care (CLRI) is a program of the RIA and partners with the long-term care (LTC) sector to enhance the health and well-being of those who live and work in LTC homes. We provide programs and resources to train and engage the current and future workforce. The Ontario CLRI is funded by the Government of Ontario and hosted at Baycrest Health Sciences, Bruyère and the RIA.
This role will be leading the development, implementation and delivery of educational programs and resources designed to serve the needs of older adults, including long-term care and retirement living environments. Emphasis will be on the development of virtual and digital education strategies (e.g., eLearning, webinars, mobile applications) and facilitating workshops, coaching, presenting and delivering education. The position requires a self-motivated, organized and dynamic individual who is able to work on more than one initiative at a time, and take on additional work as required.
SCOPE OF WORK:
• Level of Responsibility: Inform program priorities and lead the development and the effective implementation of project activities in a way that maintains the integrity of the project goals and RIA’s reputation within the research-to-practice community and the long-term care, retirement and community sectors.
• Decision-Making Authority: Ability to identify and prioritize activities for program implementation; ability to identify successes and challenges while coordinating project activities to inform adaptations for future implementations; engage in problem-solving with team members to optimize success and efficiencies; ability to seek appropriate support and decision-making as needed.
• Physical and Sensory Demands: Minimal demands typical of a position operating within an office environment; periods of extensive sitting at a desk and in meetings and concentrated use of visual senses; substantial repetitive keyboard/mouse movement; high sensory demands because of required concentration and attentiveness to detail and regular distractions and interruptions.
• Working Environment: Much of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about. Office is located in a comfortable indoor area. The work is varied and project assignments may change frequently. Work will involve regular interaction with RIA team members and external partners and stakeholders. There are deadline pressures, while at the same time there is a demand for thoroughness and accuracy. Occasional travel is required.
The following details the key accountabilities for the role:
1. Curriculum/Content Development: Lead and support the development of training and education programs and resources (videos, case studies, webinars, handouts, etc) using adult learning principles and best practices for in-person and online learning. Facilitate the co-design/co-creation of new education programs and resources with experts, stakeholders, residents, and LTC and retirement homes and their team members that aim to enhance the quality of life for those who live and work in LTC.
2. Project Coordination: Oversee the day-to-day activities of education and training initiatives, including implementation of education development, delivery, knowledge mobilization,evaluation, and translation coordination. Delivery of education may include stakeholder/client contracts development. Explore and support the development and implementation of a Learning Management System (LMS) and its integration with other platforms.
3. Facilitation and Communication: Strong writing and verbal communication skills that can be tailored to various audiences. This will include facilitating small and large group interactive
workshops/presentations/webinars and representing the RIA at events and on committees to support enhancing the quality of life and care for older adults through knowledge mobilization, education and training initiatives.
4. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Work collaboratively with team members and external stakeholders to identify, assesses and creatively solve challenges, and continuously improve and enhance education and resources. Work with e-learning/external vendors to align educational initiatives and/or to ensure educational programs are delivering expected results.
5. Teamwork and Consultation: Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders to inform and support the development of content and education. Work collaboratively with team members to ensure our resources meet the needs of the sector and are reflective of best practices in adult education.
Master’s degree in adult education, or other relevant disciplines, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience and Skills:
• A minimum of 7 years of experience developing education/e-learning curriculum for adult learners.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience working with online and virtual learning environments.
• Experience working with seniors living organizations (long-term care, retirement, assisted living) is a strong asset.
• Highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet tight deadlines within a high demand environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for adult education and group facilitation and practices
• Demonstrated skills in coaching, active-listening and using a strengths-based approach to problem-solving
• Experience working with diverse stakeholders to achieve goals and tailor education content for the target audience for example, senior leaders, personal support workers, registered nurses, physicians, dietary aids, housekeepers, etc.
• Ability to drive, plan and manage change
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with in-house and remote teams, external vendors and stakeholders.
• Strong writing skills and demonstrated ability to write in plain language that aligns with needs of target audience.
• Experience using a strengths-based and appreciative inquiry approach would be an asset
• Willingness to travel within Ontario, Canada and internationally
• Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), webinar platforms, and Learning Management Systems or other elearning environments.
• Fluent in English. Fluency in French an asset but not required
• Experience working in or supporting education in senior living environments.
• Eligible to obtain a successful vulnerable sector police clearance.
• Interest and passion for enhancing quality of life for those who live and work in LTC.
