Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Practice Guides for Long-Term Care

Creating welcoming and inclusive long-term care homes takes ongoing learning and practical action. To support this work, the Ontario CLRI’s Advancing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in Long-Term Care Program is launching a new series of EDI Practice Guides.

Designed for leaders and teams working in Ontario LTC homes, the guides include practical, topic-specific strategies, reflection questions, and additional resources to help advance inclusion and belonging in LTC. Topics have been selected based on priorities identified by the LTC sector. The guides have been co-designed with people with lived and living experience and subject matter experts to ensure the content reflects diverse perspectives and incorporates evidence-informed practices. 

The guides are being released in phases as they are completed. Each guide focuses on an important EDI topic, and they make up a resource series to support more inclusive LTC environments.

Welcoming Trans and Gender-Diverse Older Adults to Long-Term Care: A Resource for Creating Affirming and Inclusive Move-in Experiences in LTC

This resource provides practical guidance to help LTC homes create welcoming, inclusive, and affirming move-in experiences for trans and gender-diverse older adults. It supports teams in reviewing admission, assessment, care planning, communication, and organizational practices through practical actions, reflection questions, and additional learning resources. It offers concrete strategies that homes can implement and is intended to complement more in-depth training and broader organizational change efforts. Additional resources are pointed to throughout the guide to support deeper learning.

This guide is the first in a series of EDI Practice Guides that will be released throughout 2026-2027, with additional topics currently in development.

The Practice Guides are companion resources to the Ontario CLRI’s Embracing Diversity Toolkit, which is currently being refreshed to support LTC homes across Ontario. Together, these resources are intended to help homes build more equitable, inclusive, and person-centred environments.
