Guidelines for identifying and addressing social isolation and loneliness among older adults
PRESENTER:
Dr. David Conn is the Executive Vice-President of Education and Chief Academic Officer at the Baycrest Academy for Research & Education. David is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto and is a Geriatric Psychiatrist at Baycrest. He is a founding Co-Chair of the Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health and Past President of the Canadian Academy of Geriatric Psychiatry.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the presentation, participants will:
• Be aware of the association between loneliness and social isolation (L&SI) and poor health, as well as reduced life span
• Be able to describe the range of potential interventions by health and social service providers to reduce L&SI
• Consider the potential benefits and challenges in developing clinical guidelines for L&SI among older adults
