The Necessary Solution to Unnecessary Wait Times
Champlain BASE™ eConsult is a secure, online platform connecting primary care providers (PCP) to specialists. The Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care (CLRI) are supporting the integration of the service into long-term care (LTC) across Ontario.
A number of resources surrounding eConsult have been developed for those working in LTC. There is a plethora of information about the service on the eConsult website, as well as a webinar and an article written by the Ontario CLRI. See below for links to these resources.
Background
Limited access to specialist care remains a major barrier to health care in Canada. There are often high levels of frustration about poor access and too-long wait lists. Residents can often wait months to see specialists, facing frustration and sometimes worsening conditions, only to learn that all they needed was a simple fix. The risks of delays only increase as a person ages and as they become frailer. The Champlain BASE™ eConsult service was created in an effort to reduce these burdens.
