Developed by Plum Tree Memory Care, the Better Together Dementia Care (BTDC) course integrates theoretical and experiential knowledge with mentorship support to enhance LTC Team Members’ understanding of dementia and to support the use of practical strategies to support people living with dementia in LTC homes.
What makes the BTDC program different from other dementia training programs is its incorporation of ongoing mentorship support, which improves the successful transfer of knowledge into practice.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate clinical profiles: Identify the distinct types, symptoms and progression pathways of dementia, including how they uniquely impact cognitive, functional, and behavioral abilities.
- Apply person-centered care: Implement strategies that actively promote a resident’s autonomy, dignity and independence at every stage of progression.
- Adapt communication techniques: Use advanced methods tailored to the evolving cognitive needs of individuals with dementia.
- Manage physical safety and health: Implement evidence-based techniques to prevent falls and ensure safe, effective medication administration.
Duration
1 Full Day (8 Hours) + ongoing drop-in mentorship sessions.
Delivery Format
BTDC is delivered in person at your LTC Home. To hold this course, the Plum Tree Team requires approximately 30 LTC team members to be in attendance, with 20 of these being PSW’s and the other 10 being allied health professionals (i.e., nurse’s, housekeeping, dietary, recreation, etc.). All team members must be full-time or part-time employees of the LTC home, and we encourage team members from all shifts and home areas.
We understand that removing 30 team members from the LTC Home is a large ask. If you are not able to train this many team members at once, we may be able to pair you with a nearby LTC Home that is also interested in this session. Please indicate this on the enrollment form.
