Behavioural Support Rounds: CARERS Groups – Matching the Right Care Partners and Demonstrating Simulation

Presenters:

Sarah Gillespie, MSW., BSW.
Sarah is a Mental Health Clinician at the Reitman Centre, Sinai Health. She supports family care partners individually and in groups, and contributes to professional training and Knowledge-to-Practice (KTP) support of CARERS group leaders across the province. Sarah is also a member of the clinical team that supports the Outpatient Geriatric Mental Health Clinic.

Dr. Ginny Wesson
Dr. Wesson is the Medical Director, Training and External partnerships for the Enhancing Care Program, Sinai Health. A staff psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Wesson has been instrumental in the development and implementation of the CARERS Program since 2006. She brings deep clinical and research experience in geriatric psychiatry and dementia care partner support.

Cheryl Miller
Cheryl is the Provincial Program Manager of the Enhancing Care Program, Sinai Health. Cheryl provides the operational leadership for the program, overseeing strategic planning and implementation, regional and provincial partnerships, and integration and alignment with Ontario Health strategies and funded dementia care services. Under her guidance, the program has been expanded to deliver services in over 50 communities across Ontario since 2018.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify which clients may benefit the most from participation in CARERS groups and how to access referral information and program availability across Ontario.
  • Observe a simulated patient demonstration illustrating how CARERS groups teach practical problem-solving and communication skills.
