Behavioural Support Rounds: Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID): Considerations for LTC

Presenters:

Dr. Cindy Grief is a Geriatric Psychiatrist at Baycrest Health Sciences and Medical Director for Mental Health. She is an Associate Professor in the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and Co-founder and Co-chair of the International Geriatric Mental Health Education Network. She also serves as Course Director for the Canadian Academy of Geriatric Psychiatry’s national online course and leads its bereavement module, with a clinical focus on cross-cultural bereavement.

Dr. Christopher Kitamura is a Geriatric Psychiatrist at Baycrest and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. His work focuses on educational innovation and substance use disorders in older adults. He co-founded the Canadian Geriatric Substance Use Disorders Curriculum and co-chairs the International Geriatric Mental Health Education Network, a global community of over 4,500 clinicians. He is also an award-winning educator and contributor to national seniors’ mental health initiatives.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe an Overview of MAiD
  • Discuss MAiD in the context of dementia and mental illness
  • Reflect on challenges of MAiD for staff in LTC

How to Participate:

These rounds typically take place monthly from October – June, on the third Thursday of each month from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Please note that a special session will also be held in July.
