Who Can Participate?

Nursing PLEDGE is available to all licensed and publicly funded LTC homes in Ontario.

Applications are accepted and approved by the Ontario CLRI at the RIA, subject to available program funding.

Nurse Mentor Eligibility

Nurse mentors must be experienced members of the registered nursing staff (Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs)) who possess the knowledge, competencies and clinical skills to provide dedicated mentorship to mentees within the LTC home.

Homes are responsible for identifying and selecting mentors.

Mentors do not need to be in place before your home enrolls in Nursing PLEDGE. You can sign up your home today, and once enrolled, you will receive additional tools and guidance to support you in recruiting your mentors.

Successful mentors often demonstrate:

  • Clinical Excellence: Strong clinical knowledge, problem-solving skills and a high standard of day-to-day care.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication, active listening and relationship-building abilities.
  • Leadership Qualities: Experience supporting learners, preceptors or new staff, alongside a strong commitment to fostering the professional growth of others.

Nurse Mentee Eligibility

Nurse mentees are RPNs, RNs and NPs on your home’s nursing team who would benefit from strengthening their clinical skills, enhancing their daily care practice and receiving tailored support from an experienced peer.

While many mentees are newly hired nurses, LTC homes may identify any nurse on your existing team who would benefit from mentorship.

Examples may include:

  • Nurses new to long-term care
  • Nurses new to their role
  • Nurses seeking additional professional development
  • Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs)
  • Nurses looking to strengthen clinical confidence and leadership skills

Nursing students completing clinical placements are not eligible to participate as mentees through Nursing PLEDGE.
