Caregivers as Partners in Long-Term Care eLearning Course
Publish Date:
Caregivers play an imperative role in supporting the health and well-being of residents living in long-term care (LTC) homes.
Involving caregivers as partners in LTC has shown numerous benefits in the support of residents. These include:
- improved quality of care and resident outcomes
- improved working conditions for care providers
- reductions in overall costs
Caregivers as Partners in Long-Term Care is an eLearning Course, co-developed by the Ontario CLRI at Bruyére Health and the Ontario Caregiver Organization (OCO) aimed at providing practical and tangible insights on how to include, support and empower caregivers as partners on the interprofessional team in long-term care.
This one-hour course was co-designed with residents, caregivers, LTC team members and leaders to engage learners in relevant and realistic stories. Through these stories of resident and caregiver experiences in LTC, learners will engage in interactive activities and reflections.
Upon completion, learners will be equipped to:
- describe the variety of experiences and challenges faced by caregivers in the LTC context
- recognize caregivers as valued members of the interprofessional team
- identify effective communication practices when working with caregivers as partners
- describe how cultural factors affect communication
- articulate their role in supporting and empowering caregivers
Caregivers as Partners in Long-Term Care is available at no-cost, and is for interprofessional team members in long-term care, leaders, students and anyone with an interest in learning more about including caregivers as partners in the LTC setting.
This course aligns with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, Health Standards Organization’s National Long-Term Care Services Standard, and has been informed by recent research to support long-term care homes in building and strengthening people-centred approaches to care.
